Miranda Pacchiana, MSW is an essayist and freelance writer of website, social media and blog content. Quote from a reader:
“Miranda’s articles always evoke strong feelings in me, and even though some of them deal with heavy topics, I always feel a sense of optimism after reading them.“
Miranda strives to bring empathy and understanding to her writing, using stories to demonstrate to readers that they are not alone in their human struggles and challenges.
Miranda has a passion for writing about social and emotional issues. She began crafting personal essays on parenting, grief and gun violence after the 2012 shooting massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School – which her three children had previously attended. In the midst of her community’s devastation, she felt an obligation to speak up and tell the world about the impact of tragedy from a close perspective.
Miranda also writes about the impact and long-term effects of child sexual abuse. She is the creator of the blog and social media accounts: The Second Wound: Coping with Family While Healing from Sexual Abuse. She has described her own experiences of healing from childhood abuse, her devastating struggle to feel supported by members of her family, and the eventual estrangements that followed. The Second Wound offers information, understanding and camaraderie to fellow survivors in similar circumstances.
Miranda considers herself a homegrown activist. She helped found the Newtown Action Alliance, a non-profit organization that advocates for safer gun laws and supports gun violence survivors from all walks of life. She has served as the organization’s Liaison to Victims and Families, lobbied Congress for effective gun legislation, spoken publicly alongside her senators and representatives, and penned essays about the toll of gun violence in Newtown and across America.
Miranda is a mother of three. She has been married for over a quarter century to the love of her life Adam Pacchiana, all of which has been lived out in their forever home of Newtown, Connecticut.
After entering the world in a Greenwich Village apartment, Miranda grew up in Sleepy Hollow, New York. She graduated from New York University and later earned her Masters degree from Fordham School of Social Work. While focused on raising her family for two decades, she also worked at intervals as a play therapist, geriatric care manager, homeschool co-op teacher, hospice volunteer, documentary outreach coordinator, and of course, freelance writer.
Miranda is a contributor to the following anthologies:
